Cookbooks are awesome: the author's voice, the why behind a dish, and a pile of other recipes that would probably go viral if they ever got the same chance. A lot of what we cook from our phones already lives in those pages. Physical cookbooks are a great way to expand cooking knowledge past the feed.
Recipe Ancestor tracks commonly delicious recipes online and maps them back to the cookbooks they came from. Over time that becomes a simple way to see which books are foundational for modern weeknight cooking, and which ones quietly hold hundreds of recipes that still haven't made it to the internet.
This started because one person cooked from cookbooks for a few years and kept noticing the same thing: so many "new" online recipes trace back to a surprisingly small set of canonical books. The site is a plain way to share that observation, help declutter how we cook, and discover new recipes without always unlocking the phone when you're already maxed.
One person builds this, with the help of @grok and its bots. Not for money. No ads on the site. Labeled affiliate find-links support the original authors we point to, and we get a small cut.
It runs on weekly updates with as little fuss as we can manage, hence the ugly-on-purpose, fast-on-purpose design.
